Heart: Captain America

Captain America is an iconic character that symbolizes strength and patriotism, but his muscles and colorful outfit aren’t what makes him a hero.

If you’ve never seen Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers (Captain America) was originally only 5’4” and 95 pounds. He was constantly bullied, and his enlistment was rejected by the Army 5 times before he was finally given a chance. In boot camp, he couldn’t do a single pushup, failed every agility obstacle, and lagged 10 feet behind everyone else while running. What Steve didn’t know was that the Army had confidential plans to create a super soldier using a serum created by Dr. Erskine, the man that finally approved his enlistment. Dr. Erskine had been observing the recruits and selected Steve to be the one to receive the serum. The grenade test you just watched only further reinforced his decision.

Obviously, Steve wasn’t chosen to become Captain America because he was the biggest, fastest, or strongest; he was chosen because he had the qualities of a great leader. Despite his meager physique, his actions showed that he was selfless, righteous, and brave.

He had heart, especially during stressful situations when it mattered the most.

Whether you want them to or not, the contents of your heart come out when you’re put under pressure. Proverbs 4:23 describes the heart as “the wellspring of life”. In other words, all of your reactions are affected by the condition of your heart. If you allow negative feelings to reside in your heart, they will put a hindrance on your reactions when life challenges you.
